Moving maps to be part of PPL training syllabus and Skill Test

Use of a moving map display is included in proposed changes to PPL flight instruction, according to a consultation started this week by the CAA.

The moving map display, such as that provided by SkyDemon, is also an option when taking the PPL Skill Test including during the diversion exercise.

The CAA consultation is about the Acceptable Means of Compliance (AMC) and Guidance Material (GM) associated with the PPL licensing changes that are expected to be introduced this coming October. The consultation opened on 25 March and runs until 6 May 2025.

Traditional navigation still has its place though. The AMC/GM document, CAP 3094, linked to the consultation, says:

“The applicant should initially conduct the navigation exercises using a chart, manually completed flight log and maintain the flight log during the exercises. Once the applicant has reached a sufficient level of competence determined by the FI, flight planning applications and moving map devices should be integrated into the navigation exercises and supervised solo cross-country flights.”

There are three consultations containing the draft AMC/GM:

  • The Aircrew Regulation AMC/GM consultation relates to UK Regulation (EU) 1178/2011 on procedures related to civil aviation aircrew
  • The Balloon AMC GM consultation relates to UK Regulation (EU) 2018/395 (the “Balloon Regulations”)
  • The Sailplane AMC GM consultation relates to UK Regulation (EU) 2018/1976 (the “Sailplane Regulations”).
